The 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT: Still Electrifying Hearts, Not Just Batteries

It’s been a whirlwind few years in the electric vehicle (EV) market. As someone who’s been immersed in automotive technology for over a decade, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolution from novelty to near-ubiquity. Back in early 2021, when the Audi RS e-tron GT first broke cover, the landscape was far less crowded. Now, it’s a battle royale, with heavy hitters like the Lucid Air Grand Touring, Tesla Model S Plaid, and Mercedes-AMG EQS Sedan all vying for the electric crown.

The Audi RS e-tron GT arrived as a disruptor, not just another EV. It was a statement that electric could be beautiful, luxurious, and, most importantly, exhilarating. But in 2025, in a world saturated with high-performance EVs boasting ludicrous speed and extended range, does Audi’s flagship still hold its own? Let’s dive into the details.

Beauty That Turns Heads, Performance That Turns Corners

From a purely subjective standpoint, the RS e-tron GT remains one of the most captivating EVs on the road. While its sibling, the Porsche Taycan, opts for understated elegance, the Audi flexes its muscles with sculpted lines and aggressive accents. The flared fenders, connected by that mesmerizing LED light bar across the rear, give it a wide, planted stance. Up front, the sculpted bumper with integrated air curtains not only enhance aerodynamics but also amplify the car’s sporty persona.

Audi offers a palette of sophisticated colors, and I’m particularly drawn to the tactical green metallic. Combined with a luxurious Santos Brown leather interior, it showcases the brand’s dedication to individualization and elevates the ownership experience beyond the usual silver and gray options.

But let’s be honest, beauty alone isn’t enough in this segment. The RS e-tron GT needs to deliver on performance, and thankfully, it does. While the standard e-tron GT produces a respectable 469 horsepower, the RS variant unleashes a potent 590 hp, with a temporary boost to 637 hp when Boost Mode is engaged. This translates to a blistering 0-60 mph sprint in a claimed 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.

Speed vs. Thrill: It’s Not Just About the Numbers

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. On paper, the RS e-tron GT is “slower” than some of its rivals. The Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance boasts a staggering 1,050 hp and a 2.6-second 0-60 mph time, matching the Porsche Taycan Turbo’s sprint. The Tesla Model S Plaid goes even further with its 1,020 hp and a mind-bending 1.99-second launch. Even the Mercedes-AMG EQS Sedan, while still potent, lags slightly behind at 3.4 seconds.

However, horsepower figures and acceleration times only tell a portion of the story. The RS e-tron GT, along with the Taycan, leverages a two-speed transmission. This crucial difference sets it apart from the single-speed units found in the Lucid, Tesla, and Mercedes-AMG. While those EVs offer neck-snapping initial acceleration, their power delivery can taper off at higher speeds. The RS e-tron GT’s two-speed transmission ensures relentless acceleration throughout the rev range, providing a more engaging and dynamic driving experience, especially on the open road. This makes the real-world performance feel closer to its competitors than the spec sheets might suggest.

Beyond Straight Lines: The Art of Handling

Where the Audi RS e-tron GT truly shines is in its handling. The shared platform with the Porsche Taycan provides a solid foundation, but Audi has infused its own distinct character into the car’s dynamics. The adaptive air suspension, tuned for greater compliance compared to the Taycan, delivers a more comfortable and refined ride, making the RS e-tron GT an excellent daily driver.

Don’t mistake comfort for compromise, though. Point the RS e-tron GT towards a winding road, and it transforms into a surprisingly agile machine. Despite its 5,100-pound curb weight, it exhibits impressive grip, precise steering, and tenacious braking. The weight is noticeable, but the car remains remarkably balanced, inspiring confidence in corners.

My test vehicle came equipped with the optional carbon-ceramic brakes, and while the $7,100 price tag is steep, they proved their worth during repeated runs up a canyon road, delivering consistent and fade-free stopping power. For enthusiasts who prioritize performance driving, these brakes are a worthwhile investment.

The Range Question: A Matter of Perspective

The Achilles’ heel of the RS e-tron GT is its range. The EPA estimates a range of 238 miles from its 93.4 kWh battery pack, placing it behind most of its direct competitors. The Lucid Air boasts a staggering 446 miles, while the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-AMG EQS offer 396 and 277 miles, respectively.

For those with access to home charging, the range might not be a significant concern. However, for those who frequently embark on long journeys, the limited range can induce anxiety. While its rivals also experience range depletion under aggressive driving, their larger battery packs offer a greater buffer.

On the bright side, the RS e-tron GT boasts a rapid 270 kW peak charging rate, thanks to its 800-volt architecture. This enables it to replenish its battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 23 minutes at a compatible DC fast-charging station.

Cost of Entry: Premium Performance Comes at a Price

The 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT carries a base price of around $147,000, including destination charges. However, as with any high-end vehicle, the price can quickly escalate with options. My tester, equipped with the carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon performance package, and full leather interior, came in at a hefty $165,000.

This puts it in direct competition with the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance (around $163,500) and the Mercedes-AMG EQS Sedan (around $164,140). The Tesla Model S Plaid, even with options, undercuts the competition significantly, hovering around $110,000 after recent price adjustments.

The Verdict: Emotion Over Spec Sheet

So, is the RS e-tron GT still the ultimate high-performance EV in 2025? The answer, as always, depends on individual priorities. If you’re solely focused on maximizing range and achieving the quickest possible acceleration, the Lucid Air or Tesla Model S Plaid might be more compelling choices.

However, the Audi RS e-tron GT appeals to a different kind of enthusiast – one who values a holistic driving experience that transcends mere statistics. It prioritizes emotional connection, stunning design, and engaging dynamics. It’s not just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about enjoying the journey.

The RS e-tron GT reminds us that cars, especially those in this price range, are ultimately emotional purchases. They’re about how they make us feel. And with its breathtaking aesthetics and exhilarating driving dynamics, the e-tron GT still makes a powerful statement. After all, there’s more to a car than just the numbers.
